OUR RESEARCH

Rongoā Māori
In an effort to gain a better understanding of Rongoā Māori, Erena's PhD research investigated the past, present and future of rongoā Māori as a viable, credible and uniquely Māori system of healing and wellbeing. This research applied a systems approach to explore ways to ensure rongoā Māori is available for whānau to utilise in everyday life on a long-term basis. I am currently working with Ngāti Hine to develop and implement a Rongoā Māori strategic plan.

A Kaupapa Māori analysis of Cannabis and Methamphetamine use
Understanding of the reasons for use of Cannabis and Methamphetamine in New Zealand is limited and most approaches have treated addiction as a justice rather than a health problem. Answering questions about this is essential for understanding the underlying causes, and for developing systems that can support whānau to achieve their wellbeing goals in mana enhancing ways. This research will explore critical moments in time that have impacted on later pathways in life, and explore intervention points that may improve wellbeing trajectories

Indigenous healing systems
Building upon her PhD work, Erena travelled to India to study Ayurveda (the Indigenous healing system) and investigate similarities between Rongoā Māori and Ayurveda systems. Erena will also travel to the USA in 2023 on a Fulbright Ngā Pae o Te Māramatanga Graduate Fellowship to research Native Hawai'ian and Native American healing systems.
